The Word “Navratri” has two words:“Nav” (Nine) and “Ratri” (Night). “Nav” denotes a number 9 and “Ratri” denotes the nighttime. There is one of the wonderful combinations of numerical digit and Time in this “Navratri” word.

According to the Indian Culture, there are two main seasons of  Navratri, in a year.

  1. Sharad navaratris is the post-monsoon autumn festival that is most observed in the honor of the divine feminine Devi (Durga). The festival is celebrated in the bright half of the Hindu calendar month Ashvin, which typically falls in the Gregorian months of September and October.

  2. Varshik Navaratris in the starting of the New hindu Calander Vikrami Samwat which mainly falls during the months March and April

According to our Indian sacred scripture, there are 40 navaratris for the welfare of the human beings,

But four Navratris are the main Which are celebrated in period from the Shula Paksh Tithi’s to the navami tithi’s in the months of Chaitra, Ashada, Aswin and Magh. They can be observe as the symbol of our four major efforts: Dharma, Arth(economy), Kaam (Wishes) and Moksha (Salvation)

Among these we merge the four into TWO. By merging Arth into Dharma and Kaam into Jigyasa (Curiosity) for Moksha, then there remains only the two Navaratris as the symbols of major efforts of life.

In navaratis akhand jot (Lamps) are illuminated continuously for the nine nights and ten days. With this we remove the darkness in nine nights which is spreaded is removed for forever by this akhand jot (Lamp) and celebrates the festival of spritual victory between us. we can use Ghee or Til oil for illuminating the lamp.

The life emerging seasons are the reasons of the myths of these two Navaratris. The combination of Ashwin -Winter Season and Coldness with Chaitra – Autumn and Summer season, becomes a Boon giving couple.

From one season wheat (which symbols fire) and second season rice (which symbols moon), the mother nature gifts us the life nutritious couple of fire and moon. So with this, both Navaratris are NAVARATRI OF  nav Gauri or the Shakti Puja of Par-Brahm Shri Ram Chandra ji and the divine feminine Devi Durga or Shri Maha Lakshami Puja.
